Born in Portland, Oregon and currently residing in Mira Mesa, Erin Hanson describes herself as a contemporary impressionist, being inspired by the beauty of nature and the vibrant colors therein. She uses thick and expressive brush strokes, full of texture and movement. This “Open Impressionism” is a contemporary blending of modern expressionism and early impressionism.
The Early Years
Hanson began painting as a very young girl, becoming more than adept in acrylics, oils, pen and ink, watercolor, pastels, and life drawing. By age ten she was already commissioning paintings and was employed by a mural studio after school by age 12. At the mural studio, she learned the techniques of acrylics on large 40-foot canvases.
She moved on to Otis College of Art two years later, immersing herself into figure drawing. Hanson graduated high school at age 16, attending UC Berkeley and attaining a degree in Bioengineering.
A love for rock climbing and vibrant landscapes provided by Mother Nature fused together into the unique and pioneered “open impressionism” that defines Hanson’s work to this day. After graduating from college, she spent much time among the colorful cliffs of Nevada and Utah, watching the sun rise in the east and set in the west amongst the changing colors of desert landscapes throughout the seasons. Her breathtaking surroundings inspired Hanson to create at least one painting a week for the rest of her life, a decision she has stuck to for the past decade.
To this day and without an end in sight, Erin Hanson prides herself in using the outdoors as primary inspiration for her huge collection of work. She continues to rock climb, backpack, and hike around new and exciting areas around California and the Southwest, transforming landscapes into abstract mosaics of color and texture.
